Neurontin Lawuit, Pfizer Loses

Pfizer Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Company pleaded guilty to criminal charges that the Warner-Lambert subsidiary which Pfizer bought in 2000 promoted Neurontin for off-label uses without any type of scientific support. FDA approved this drug as a powerful epileptic drug, but there is a caveat. Only if FDA approves. Pfizer apparently got around this by sending the drug out on an “off label” usage and has been sentenced to pay $240 million, the second largest criminal fine ever imposed in health care fraud prosecutions per the Justice Department. The manufacturer spent hundreds of thousands toward a drug for illnesses such as: Bipolar, mental disorders, Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis, migraines, restless leg syndrome, drug and alcohol use, attention deficit disorder, pain and as a monthly treatment for epilepsy. Time has already proven the drug to be useless. No wonder. How can one drug help cure or eliminate so many seemingly unrelated illnesses? Patients feel, and are angered, that Neurontin was based on misleading information by Pfizer and, in fact, was nothing more than a financial scheme. Because of the unheard of wide range of uses for the drug, lawyers may decide to file suits on an individual basis instead of a class action. Folks, is there any wonder why the cost of drugs has risen to the stratosphere?
